Cannabis: A Complicated History Pt.2

In this episode, we continue looking at the complicated history of cannabis. 

We pick up in the 1980s and the Reagan era with the war on drugs.

We learn of the discovery of the endocannabinoid system almost 30 years later by Israeli scientist, Dr. Rafael Mechoulam, and how these findings help push our cause forward. 

Lastly but most importantly both episodes share the impact that cannabis criminalization has had on already marginalized communities and the incarceration rates of African Americans, Hispanics, and other POC communities. We look at the divisive and racist propaganda, incarcerations, and financial impact that cannabis and the legal systems have used to keep these communities in the margins.

Cannabis at the time of this recording a Schedule 1 drug at the federal level and not considered for medical use. This level of restriction has made it difficult to continue the research necessary to create greater gains in cannabis medicine. However, we continue to champion on and the government begins to take note of the ever-changing green rush.

n the last Congressional session, NORML supporters drove hundreds of thousands of messages to Congress in support of our reform efforts. And while we made history in the House, we came up short in the Senate under then-Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Today, things are different. With support for reform by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, along with allies Cory Booker and Ron Wyden, there is a real window in the US Senate to bring about tangible change.

While Sens. Schumer, Booker, and Wyden continue to review public comments regarding The Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act, we need the House to ramp up the pressure on their Senate colleagues to generate enough elected officials to the table to overcome the legislative filibuster.

So right now, we must strike while momentum is on our side. Contact your member of Congress and tell them now is the time to do their job and represent you by supporting a repeal of marijuana prohibition.

Do you struggle with falling asleep or staying asleep?

Sleep is essential for maintaining our mental and physical health, yet it eludes many adults. Insomnia , wakefulness and exhaustion is a very common problem, one that takes a toll on your energy, mood, and ability to function during the day.

The first thing we address during consults is SLEEP! Even if that’s not the primary concern for the visit. Some cannabis strains can help with relaxation and even sedating effects which helps us to get a better night’s sleep.

Cannabis has analgesic properties that may provide some relief for those with chronic pain, while the anti-anxiety properties can soothe a stressed out mind and body.

Sleep is one of the biggest challenges among my clients. Methods of cannabis consumption also matter.

With oral/edible products:
To get to sleep take 1-2 hours before bedtime.

To stay asleep take right at bedtime.

Inhalation may help you get to sleep but the duration of inhaled cannabis is 2-4 hrs with such a short window of effect, inhalation may not support a full night’s sleep.
